Chapter Twenty

“Are you going to bring it up?” Lauren asked as she twirled Harmony’s hair around the curling iron.

If it weren’t for Lauren, Harmony would have thrown on jeans and a T-shirt for her date with Harvey.

Ever since Tabitha had made it sound like Chase had been carrying on with Bridgette all this time, Harmony had wanted to confront him. But she wasn’t going to do it over a text. She’d wait until she saw him. Which meant, despite her best efforts, she’d spent the last couple hours seething. Fortunately, Lauren had calmed her down and was now trying to convince her not to confront Chase when she was upset.

“I have to bring it up. I’m about to jump out of my skin.”

Lauren nodded. “For what it’s worth, I think Tabitha was wrong. Chase wouldn’t lie to you. Plus, since your birthday, he’s been spending a lot more time at home.”

Harmony leaned in toward the bathroom mirror and applied some mascara.

“How do you know that?” she asked.

“He’s been watching all the shows we watch and keeping up. I know that because he always wants to talk about them.”

“You’ve gotten to know Chase quite well this past year, wouldn’t you say?”

“He and Nick have grown close. So yeah, I have.”

Harmony turned to her friend. “How long did you know Chase had a thing for me?”

Lauren avoided her gaze and was very interested in her tubes of lipstick sitting on the counter. Finally, she shrugged her shoulders. “I suspected for a while, but I didn’t know for sure until you told me he asked you out. But I talked to Nick, and he’s known for quite a while.”

She crossed her arms. “And he didn’t say anything?”

“Nope. Not to me. When I asked him why, he told me it was Chase’s business to tell. Also,” Lauren looked her in the eye, “he wanted to see Chase step up. If he really wanted you, then he needed to work for it. Nick figured if he said anything, you could have gone to Chase.”

She was right. If she thought Chase had felt the same, she would have pushed him. And he really needed to come around in his own time.

They walked to Harmony’s closet, and Lauren reached for the blue wrap dress.

“I like this one.”

“I wore it for our last almost date. I planned to wear this one.” She pulled out a deep green halter style dress that fit snugly.

“But now I’m not sure. I don’t want to taint the memory of this dress if I find out he’s lying.”

“Stop it. He’s not lying. He is really into you. Wear this dress.”

The sound of the doorbell made her jump.

“Put that on. I’ll answer the door.”

Lauren raced out of the room. Harmony heard her friend greet Chase and lead him to the kitchen.

To avoid her friend’s wrath, Harmony put on the green dress. Then she twirled in front of her mirror. She had to admit, she looked good. But she was nervous. More so than she’d ever been around him.
